I love a good story. I love complimenting someone on a piece of jewelry and instead of the standard ’Thank you’, I hear a great story about love, or loss, or proclaiming one’s independence.  I like the way they absentmindedly let their fingers flit over a ring, or necklace as they go back to the moment when they were given, or perhaps, found the piece. Such stories belong to jewelry that is exceptional and unique. Such jewelry can be found in the collections of Jeweliany. Although indisputably modern, each of the collections has a stylish element that will never go out of fashion. The pieces- a beautiful (and slightly naughty) harness necklace, a stack of three finely crafted rings that sit just above the knuckle, a small gold disc bearing one’s initial that falls right in the hollow of the neck,or the Constellation Collection with its special design for each star sign- are dreamy. They are the perfect balance of delicacy and strength and they are the type of pieces that every woman should have in her jewelry collection.

Jeweliany is the creation of Julie Simpson, one of San Diego’s youngest and most talented jewelry designers. She started creating jewelry while studying in Italy where she also waited tables. She had the good instincts to wear her creations to work and soon they were in high demand. She made more money from selling her jewelry than she did in tips.  After graduating from San Diego State University and apprenticing with a jewelry designer, Simpson was inspired to start her own line. She got to work creating the beautiful and eclectic pieces that are consistently picked up by hot boutiques.  She also focused on the Constellation collection which is modeled after the star signs. Simpson wanted to create something more abstract and ethereal than the traditional symbols that are often featured in horoscope columns so the series went through several iterations before she happened upon the perfect illustration of her muse- the great astronomical mural by French painter Paul Halle in Grand Central Station.  The end result was a slender tab of silver with diamond accents, etched with a constellation, hanging from a beautiful gold chain. Though the Grand Central mural focuses on the October through March zodiac, the Jeweliany Constellation Collection features a different design for the each of the star signs. In an era of personality matching they serve as abstract identification badges. "Everybody likes something they can relate to, something that says ’this is who I am’" states Simpson. But the necklaces are more elegant than the standard accessories that usually serve as identifiers like birthstones or charm bracelets.  They are deeply personal but they are not obvious or showy. The entire collection, though whimsical and unique, shows Simpson’s remarkable restraint and is a definite antidote to the recent epidemic of bling. "People are becoming more introspective and seeking out things that are a little more meaningful" says Simpson. Now, don’t get the idea that Jeweliany pieces are safe or boring. They are quirky and disarmingly seductive. Simpson typically makes all of her pieces to order but the Constellation group is the first from Jeweliany to be produced. They’re made in her hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas and were recently made available on the Jeweliany website.  The rest of her jewelry is also sold online and in small boutiques which she feels expresses her current aesthetic a bit better than larger stores. Of course, it’s inevitable that one of the major stores like Neiman’s or Saks will soon pick up on the beauty of Jeweliany and what happens after that? Well. It’s in the stars.
